My Favorite Art Supplies for Pencil Drawings

Drawing of Zoe Kravitz by Amber D'Amato Instagram Reel of Zoe Kravitz's Drawing Woodless Graphite Pencils by Koh-I-Noor This 12-pack of woodless pencils has 6 different grades: HB, 2B, 4B, 6B, 8B, and 9B. I love these pencils because you can achieve a wide range of depth of dark and light. The only thing that would make this pack better is a 2H pencil. I like to lightly sketch out a drawing on paper before I commit to darker graphite that is harder to erase. This pack was $20 but I had a half-off coupon, pretty awesome for $10. Especially since I love them.  Woodless Colour Pencils by Koh-I-Noor Koh-I-Noor's Woodless Colour Pencils usually go for $20, but I found them in the clearance section of Michaels for $5. I don't think anyone knows how great they are, I certainly did not. They are fun to color in a coloring book, newsprint paper, and regular sketchbook paper. I have yet to use them on better quality paper. The colors are vibrant, nothing special, but what makes t...

Art Crush ~ Charmaine Olivia

Charcoal & Roses by Charmaine Olivia I stumbled upon Charmaine Olivia's art in 2008 on Facebook. I think it is safe to say she is the first artist I encountered that I loved that is still alive! Technically, my first living art crush was in the 90's, a local Long Island artist by the name of Kim Handle, but she no longer makes art, and pursued her other passion, science. What I love about Charmaine Olivia's art is that it can be compared to Led Zeppelin's music in the sense that each song sounds different, but you always know it is Led Zeppelin. Charmaine went through a lot of different styles throughout the years and yet, you know it is always her work. A beautiful mix of realism and imagination.  Rhianna by Charmaine Olivia Amethyst by Charmaine Olivia Agony & Ecstasy by Charmaine Olivia Art by Charmaine Olivia Charmaine Olivia at one of her solo shows. Art Crush: Leonardo da Vinci

Happy Birthday, Leonardo da Vinci!  Happy Tax Day said no one! Pupil by Leonardo da Vinci & my interpretation. In college I took every single art history and fine art class available. I remember staring at a photo of Leonardo da Vinci's La Scapigliata, (I am also a lady with disheveled hair), and thought, ok, I understand why he is so loved.  I sometimes wonder what he would think of the book, The Da Vinci Code. Ha! After college I read the book in 2005 with my ex, well, my boyfriend at the time. We loved the book. Our best moments were in bed while listening to ridiculously dramatic classical music, reading books, and drinking 40's or Olde English. Um, I always aimed for Wine or Wine Cooler type of drinks. Or a Guinness. Very rarely a 40, I promise.  After the movie, The Da Vinci Code came out, it was like Langston Hughes' poem, " Goodbye Christ ." There are so many products named after him: Flavoring syrup, cbd products, acrylic paint, wood panels, robotic s...

Art Crush ~ Jel Ena

You can find this original in her shop: Jel Ena's Spring Equinox I don't feel comfortable making Jel Ena inspired art because there might be a copyright issue. If not, at the very least I would not want to cause unnecessary offense, especially since she is one of my favorite artists. Check out her work on TikTok, Instagram, as well as her shop.  💘

Art Crush ~ Gustav Klimt

Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I by Gustav Klimt Symbolist painter Gustav Klimt is one of my favorite artists since childhood. In 2017 I had the chance to see his painting, Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I, at the Neue Galerie in NYC.  It looked bigger than me, and beautiful. What I love and interpret from his art is that his beautiful and colorful subjects are captured with love and celebration.   In New York, Klimt also has art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA and The Jewish Museum. I hope to visit Vienna, Austria, where most of his work lives. Gustav Klimt holding his friend, Katze. Speculation: He loved cats, which means he probably respected their personal space and boundaries too. I appreciate people who can do that. Although, in the photo he looks like he has the cat in a chokehold.  Goldfish by Gustav Klimt I often wonder if I love gold because of Klimt's art? I took a 3 question personality test a few years back, and one of the questions was, "What is y...
