(9x12) I Love Her by Amber D'Amato I always hated drawing or painting teeth, but here is a growth piece. I drew teeth! I did it! I did it! I started with a 2H graphite pencil, filled in the hair and other items with pen ink, and finished with Sennelier Oil Pastels in certain areas. I discovered rubber color shapers! I wish I had known about color shapers sooner. I spent so many years rubbing my finger pads raw. They also help with giving sharp lines. They can be also used with paint. I believe that discovering new art supplies, mediums, and tools for art keeps you fresh and inspired.

Lethe by Amber D'Amato Hello Again! Above is a painting I made in about 5-6 hours in two sittings. It is has been awhile since my last post. I started a new job and I have a lovely fancy title. I am currently finding a way to carve out creative time. Lately I have been looking at my inspiration objectively, my creativity comes in two forms: Pieces I have no idea what to do with and pieces I have absolute vision for. Both are fun processes and have their individual benefits. The art pieces that I have absolute vision for are finished in one day. It is extremely satisfying feeling and a much needed confidence boost when I take a break from a piece I am struggling with that is taking forever. The other pieces... The ones I struggle with inspiration-wise are sometimes the best pieces. I have grand plans for these pieces, but something hinders the process. Currently I am doing a commission piece where I feel guilty about walking away from. I find that when I make pain...

The 1st step is admitting you have a problem. I have an addiction to a new app on my phone. It is called Motion Portrait . It is so extremely satisfying to see a drawing or painting come to life, whether it is of an actual person or someone I have made up. Here are a couple of videos I made from that app with my own art work.

I created this positive self portrait to counteract my emotional self portrait last September. Ha! This painting is based on a photo of myself in 2011 with a phone app filter. This is the first time using tar gel and I love it! I found it was easy to work with and if I laid it flat it didn't move while it was drying. I think I will use it for another idea I was reserving for pouring medium. Pouring medium is great, but it takes over the whole surface. With tar gel, it's original purpose is for a more of a Jackson Pollack splatters, but it stays put and it doesn't take over the whole surface if I want to just make a section shiny. I applied it with a plastic palette knife so it did not ruin any of my brushes. Oo0oOh... A celestial cloak! I grew up in a Jehovah Witness home and then my parents divorced and my mother baptized us Catholic. Since I was almost a preteen I was told I could choose my confirmation name. I chose Mary, for Magdalene. I thought I was being a funny wise ass until the Deacon told me that I had the same birthday as the Mother Mary. Ever wonder why the astrological sign Virgo is the sign of The Virgin? Yeah. If she exists and she just so happened to be watching my younger self back then, I hope I made her laugh. Fast forward about twenty-five years later, I modeled for a scanography piece based on the Last Supper. If you go about The DaVinci Code, I was seated where Mary Magdalene sat. ;-) You know, this sketchbook I use for inktober is a 3.5 x 5.5 moleskine sketchbook. It's tiny!
